Planting Design
Plants play a vital role in any great garden. Understanding the conditions of the garden, the style of the property and the local environment is key to creating a fresh and exciting new planting scheme.
Used creatively plants can achieve so many functions in a garden. Providing colour and seasonal variation they can also be used to create interesting forms and shapes. Giving impressive ‘structure’ and height, hedges are often the best way to define boundaries, and act as the natural backdrop to the rest of the planting.
New Planting Schemes
A good planting scheme will have a sense of visual rhythm. This balance between different plant types will help create visual interest and harmony while allowing for moments of dynamic seasonal variation. Repetition of plants throughout the scheme will make the design appear cohesive and strong.
Giving thought to the seasons and how each plant will look at any given time of year is also important. Bold herbaceous borders that look great in high summer will invariably look relatively bare in the depths of winter. Evergreen shrubs that create visual impact in winter will remain relatively ‘static’ in the growing season.
Planting Plans
Planting plans give a precise layout to follow when planting a new scheme. This allows for the accurate placement of each and every plant to give balance to the design. Correct spacing between plants avoids the congestion of trees and shrubs in future years, resulting in a more appropriate layout that will gradually mature over time. So understanding the eventual height and spread of each plant is important.

Container Planting
Many beautiful shrubs and small trees do very well in pots and containers and will happily last for many years. A large pot will act as a focal point in a larger planting scheme. Two pots together can dress either side of the front door. Pots lining a terrace or placed down a set of wide steps will add a sense of luxury to a property and provide visual height and interest.
Planting in pots and containers also allows for placing plants in otherwise less appropriate spaces. This adds another visual element to the look of the garden. Selecting the appropriate pots and containers is all important and these should fit with the overall design. A few large pots of the same style will usually look more effective than an eclectic mix of smaller containers.
